During the past few months, news and discussions about artificial intelligence (AI) – including ChatGPT – have dominated the headlines and social media.

ChatGPT, an AI-powered technology that can generate text, has the potential to significantly change the way that consumers, industries and businesses operate – health care included.

As revolutionary as ChatGPT is, it’s imperative that Methodist staff understand the security implications of using this new tool.

It is a security risk to put any proprietary information into ChatGPT!

ChatGPT users should keep in mind that any information they enter into the tool is made available to the world. Specifically, Methodist’s Information Security team doesn’t know who the custodian is for information collected by ChatGPT, and thus we must assume this information is viewable to the public.

Submitting protected health information (PHI) or proprietary information to ChatGPT could put Methodist at risk of a breach or compromise.
