In order to take on the challenge that climate change poses to Methodist Health System and our communities, we need to consistently evaluate and adapt our sustainability efforts.

For the start of 2023, we’ve put together a five-year update to the original 2018 Sustainability Plan that helps us quantify our entire impact as a system. We’ve expanded our data collection process to include all locations, and we’ve also revised some of our goals. Through this update process, we’ve identified priorities for the coming years that will help us meet these goals.

Below are some highlights. Read the full report here and view key updates here, or visit the sustainability intranet page for more information.

  • We achieved a 24% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions for the four buildings included in the original baseline (from 2018 peak). Through our Net Zero Pathway decarbonization analysis, we have a plan for continuing this trend and meeting our new 50% reduction goal by 2030 through efficiency upgrades, renewable energy and electrification.
  • Composting and recycling efforts at the 825 Building have allowed us to divert 69% of material from the landfill.
  • Our new Commute with Care Program provides benefits to employees who don’t drive alone to work and instead commute sustainably by using public transit, biking, walking, carpooling or working from home. This program will support us in achieving our new goal of 30% sustainable commuting by 2030.
