The monthly Making a Difference Award honors a preceptor who makes an impact on a new nurse training at Methodist Hospital or Methodist Women’s Hospital. While completing an evaluation of their preceptor, each new nurse has the opportunity to submit a nomination for the Making a Difference Award.

The award was inspired by the tale of the starfish, which emphasizes how even one simple act can make a difference for someone else.

Katie Frew, BSN, RN, a registered nurse on the Critical Care Unit at Methodist Hospital, was honored with the Making a Difference Award for June 2024. She was nominated by a new nurse, who wrote:

“Katie could write a book about tips and tricks of the ICU! She is full of knowledge and makes an excellent ICU nurse and preceptor. She filled out my packet weekly to note things I improved upon and identify others that I could use a little more practice with. She always gave great feedback! ... Katie was so supportive and constantly encouraged me. She had confidence in me! She made me feel so comfortable. ... She is a mentor in multiple areas of my life, and I am so grateful that I was paired with her for orientation!”

Congratulations, Katie! Your foundation of clinical excellence, teaching methods, enthusiasm, encouragement and support made a difference. Thank you for your commitment and dedication to training new Methodist nurses!
