Methodist’s IT security team has an important reminder related to generic logins – which is when the same username and password are used by more than one person.

Simply put, this is not an acceptable practice within the health system.

A generic login provides no security for the multiple IT systems at work within the organization. This is especially true for patient health information (PHI). The use of a generic login can result in virtually no control over who’s viewing PHI.

The danger of using a generic login is that an unauthorized person may access PHI, resulting in an extremely costly IT breach. It also harms Methodist’s reputation as being safe stewards of patient information.

If you’re aware of individuals or departments that may be using generic logins, please notify IT security immediately. Steps can be taken to create a safer environment.
