The sonography program at Nebraska Methodist College (NMC) is looking for ultrasound volunteers who are willing to have the following ultrasounds performed for student practice only: echocardiograms (heart ultrasounds), carotid, abdominal, aorta, thyroid, and lower/upper extremity arterial/venous.

The ultrasounds are performed by first-year NMC students under the supervision of a registered sonographer. Each session is one hour in length. With your help, students can practice their ultrasound skills. These ultrasound exams are for practice purposes only. No results will be given at these sessions.

All practice ultrasounds will be performed at NMC. The sonography lab is located down the hill from main campus (501 N. 87th St.). Please see the attached map of the location. A student will meet you at the south entrance of the building (marked by the star on the map; door closest to Dodge Street). You will be asked to sign volunteer waiver(s) on your first visit.

Description of Ultrasound Exams

Echocardiogram: An ultrasound exam that images the heart in various locations on the chest (center of the chest, left side under the left breast and in the stomach looking up at the heart). Each volunteer will be asked to remove clothing from the waist up and put on a provided gown. The volunteer will remain covered at all times. The volunteer will be asked to lie on their left side and/or flat on their back for the exam.

Lower extremity arterial/venous ultrasound: An ultrasound that images the arteries or veins in the legs. The volunteer will be asked to bring or wear loose-fitting shorts for the exam. The sonography student will begin to image high in the groin and scan down to the ankle. The volunteer will be covered with a sheet or blanket when not being imaged.

Abdominal ultrasound: An ultrasound that images structure(s) such as the abdomen, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, kidneys and spleen. The volunteer will be asked to lie in various positions and to uncover their abdominal region, allowing the student to image the abdominal region.

Aorta ultrasound: An ultrasound that images the abdominal aorta. The volunteer will be asked to lie on their back and to uncover their abdominal region, allowing the student to image the abdominal region into the groin.

Carotid ultrasound: An ultrasound that images the following vessel(s) in the neck: carotid arteries, subclavian arteries and vertebral arteries. The volunteer will be asked to lie on their back and the student will be scanning the neck region.

Upper extremity arterial/venous ultrasound: An ultrasound that images the arteries or veins in the arms. The volunteer will be asked to change into a gown allowing student access to scan the neck and the inside/outside of the arm.

Thyroid ultrasound: An ultrasound that images the thyroid. The volunteer will be asked to lie on their back, and the student will be scanning the neck region.

A surgical mask must be worn in the sonography lab at all times. We can provide a mask upon your arrival. For more information and details regarding safety precautions, please call (402) 354-7135.
