Haleigh Zyzda, BSN, RN, from the Methodist Hospital Progressive Care Unit, was honored at a recognition ceremony on Tuesday, January 12, as the January DAISY Award winner for Methodist Hospital and Methodist Women's Hospital.

She was nominated for the honor by a patient's daughter-in-law, who was one of 19 family members at the side of their loved one as he reached the end of his life.

"Haleigh went above and beyond to care for him and also care for us," the daughter-in-law wrote. "She went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable — all the while caring for the patient."

The daughter-in-law especially appreciated how "patient, gentle, concise and very caring" Haleigh was in answering the family members' many questions and in explaining their loved one's condition and care in terms everyone could understand, including one of the younger members of the family who was distressed to see a beloved grandparent so ill.

"I can't say enough good things about the nursing staff, but especially Haleigh Zyzda. She made that awful night tolerable for everyone. Please consider her for the coveted DAISY Award."

The DAISY Award is a nationwide program that rewards and celebrates extraordinary skill and compassionate care given by nurses every day. Nurses can be nominated by anyone, including patients, family members, physicians, supervisors or their peers.
